Nitrate Vulnerable Zones are areas which are at risk of Nitrate pollution through agricultural processes.

Within England, around 55% of the landmass is part of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones. Nitrate levels are monitored throughout the UK, and every 4 years DEFRA reviews and amends the areas which are deemed vulnerable.

If your land falls within a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, this will limit some activities you can carry out which could cause Nitrate pollution. These limitations must be adhered to as part of Cross Compliance rules known as Statutory Management Requirements (SMRs).

Failure to comply with these rules can result in a reduction of a farm’s annual payment.
